    Sadly Disappointed 2
After opening the box, my first impression was that it was a very nicely packaged unit with slim lines and weighed hardly anything at all. The keyboard was small, but I expected that from a little netbook. After awhile I got used to the size and being without a left shift key. I was excited to try out the Ubuntu Remix that I heard so much about. After booting up, I had no trouble navigating around but found that after about an hour of getting to know this netbook, it just froze up. After rebooting, it would work for another 15 minutes then freeze up again. Attempting to connect to my wireless router proved to be a challenge. It constantly dropped the signal and everytime I closed and came back to use the internet, I had to re-install it to the wireless. There were no instructions other than a brief pamphlet guiding you through the quick start set-up which was no help at all. When going to the Ubuntu site on my PC, I felt at a loss as the procedures for trouble shooting and setting up was beyond my technical abilities and comprehension.

After many attempts it finally did work fine until 2 weeks later when I took it on a business trip (the reason why it was purchased in the first place). After initially connecting to my hotel wi-fi, I had the same problem of the dropped connections and re-installing every time I turned the computer back on. Freezing as soon as I logged on and error messages got me so frustrated that I took it down to the neighborhood electronic superstore for technical help. Unfortunately, after the techician's attempts at trouble shooting it, he found that it was the Ubuntu OS that was causing the problem. Not being too techinically literate and not having much time since I was late for my meeting, I could not understand the problem so I gave it up for loss. I decided to take a quick look around the store and see what they had to offer, being that I needed a computer desperately. I hurriedly purchased another well-known brand with the choice of Ubuntu or Windows XP. Needless to say, I purchased the familiar XP which to this date has given me no problems after almost a month.

Granted, Ubuntu Remix may be a great system for some but I'm sorry that it did not work for me. I was very excited to be able to change over from windows because of all the good reviews that I've read and would have loved for it to work out. I've decided to keep the little Sylvania and install the Windows XP on it for my niece.

Now yellow means anything but caution.5
The color is what any New Yorker would recognize as taxi-cab yellow, though this time you don't have to keep watching the meter, because the battery has plenty of juice -- mine goes for a few hours and then some, and that's with Wifi on the entire time. (Granted, that's not as impressive as the eight hours claimed by some netbooks, but that is one of very few shortcomings of this unit.)

This was the fifth netbook I've tried -- returned all four others due to technical problems, ranging from non-responsive trackpads (an Asus and an Aspire) to sudden shut-downs -- and after weeks of use, I've found the Sylvania G Meso to be the highest quality product of the lot.

The clicker buttons on the trackpad are far easier to press than the ones on the Asus and Aspire One -- boy, were those stiff and impossible! -- but to be thorough, I should mention that the HP Mini-note's buttons are easier still, though the HP's higher price and lower specs don't make it a contender.

Internet speed on the Meso is good, but even though I'm in love with this machine, I have to admit there are times when it seems just a tad slow. I'm no computer geek, but my gut tells me there may be some tweaking that could speed things up -- one reviewer said that installing the regular Ubuntu (versus the Remix that comes installed) could help, and I have a feeling some security software I added could be slowing things down. But to be clear, this is a FAST computer for the most part, and web pages load effortlessly most if not all of the time.

Screen images are crisp and clear, and the soothing non-glare finish is so easy on the eyes, I didn't experience the eyestrain I might have expected from an 8.9-inch screen.

And the best thing: this taxi-cab yellow computer costs so little, it won't be the end of the world if you end up leaving it in the backseat on an actual taxi.

    Splendiferously GOOD!!5
It took a while to get my new Meso G netbook (I don't think they can make them fast enough!!). First I couldn't believe how cheap it was but when I fired it up I was seriously impressed. The screen quality is superb, crisp, bright clear graphics but with hardly any reflections like you get on some laptops. The build quality of the netbook is outstanding. It appears very well built.

I did have to run the firmware update from Sylvania's web site to get the wireless working properly. I got the Ubuntu version (absolutely brilliant - no "Windows tax", no viruses, no malware, no adware, very fast and TONS of FREE software you can install at will to do just about anything!!). I did however update the system to the latest regular version of Ubuntu - which also made the wireless much much faster!

The keyboard is a little small (like all netbooks) but it didn't take long for me to get used to it. I bought the smallest laptop bag I could find for it. The meso fits in one of the "half" pockets inside the bag!!! Also, when in the bag with power supply, etc. it still feels like the bag is empty. This is going to be a dream for traveling!

I have one of those Cricket broadband USB modems. I was amazed that it simply worked as soon as I plugged it in. No messing around at all.

I keep all my major files (music, photos, etc.) on a remote server. I've set up my Meso so I can mount the remote disks via sshfs at will. For example, I can now play and organize my music using Rhythmbox (the free Linux iTunes type app) seamlessly without having to keep any files on the netbook. It also works great with my iPod.

If you want a small, portable, lightweight yet very powerful machine for email, web surfing, etc. then I would definitely recommend the G meso!!!
