    Amazon.com Product Description
Satisfy your multimedia and gaming needs wherever you roam with the thin, light Toshiba Satellite P105-S6197 laptop, which provides great DVD viewing as well as immersive gaming graphics thanks to the 17-inch TruBrite display and the Intel GMA 950 video card with up to 196 MB of dynamically allocated shared video memory. You can easily use this laptop as an entertainment center, with Toshiba's unique Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. It's powered by Intel's 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. It provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance. This laptop also features a 160 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed DDR2 RAM (4 GB maximum), tri-mode Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g), built-in Harman Kardon speakers, multi-format/dual-layer DVD burner, ExpressCard slot, multi-format memory card reader, and a fingerprint reader for added security.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

    The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 processor has a 1.6 GHz processor speed, fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

  • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
  • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
  • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
  • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The 160 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) is about double the average in size for notebook PCs. It provides more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software and allows for a good-sized digital media library. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a very good start for power users, and it offers a decently fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add up to 4 GB of RAM for smooth DVD playback and 3-D gaming. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • DVD/CD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 103-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.

    Screen, Video & Audio
This laptop has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 196 MB of shared video memory. It offers both VGA and S-Video output connections for connecting to monitors and TVs. You'll enjoy crisp sound via the built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers, and it has standard headphone and microphone jacks.

    Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This Toshiba Satellite has an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN, which is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (in addition to a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect to your favorite WiFi hotspot.

Good Notebook but major problems with Toshiba..be warned3
I have had this laptop for a little while now and I waited to review until some issues got resolved. This may be a bit lengthy but I hope it helps those of you looking to buy a laptop. Another reviewer wrote about a delivery issue with Amazon stating one date then pushing it off for 2 mos. I had the same issue, but after escalating Amazon did deliver the notebook on time.

The notebook itself is very nice. I read all the other reviews and I had no problems with USB ports or the pixels on the screen. As mentioned, the keyboard is narrow and if you type fast like I do it takes some getting used to. I kept pressing the wrong keys especially the Shift on the right side, but I am getting used to it. I agree that it is annoying. I had no problems with Vista or installing my older software, it was easy. The only technical issue I have had so far was an error message on the Fingerprint reader. "fingerprint reader is not connected" but the next reboot it was fine..it is a little tricky to get it to work as others mentioned. Overall it is a good laptop.

Now the very troublesome part. Toshiba support, it is beyond terrible. I had read the other reviews and thought maybe it wasn't as bad as people said. All companies can get slammed in support, so maybe Toshiba wasn't so bad. I was wrong, it is far worse than what people have said. This laptop originally had the spec showing One Note 2007 full version. That software was missing from my laptop (see review below as another customer had the same problem and Toshiba refused to help them). I called Toshiba support and held forever, got a tech support person who could not speak nor understand English and after repeating myself several times told me that I had to call Microsoft about the software. I explained that it was OEM software and had nothing to do with Microsoft, he then told me to contact Amazon then said he had nothing to do with it to go to customer support. I waited 30 minutes (no exaggeration) for customer support who told me that tech support should have helped me (while I was holding for customer support I did call Toshiba sales and they verified One Note should have been pre-installed). Customer support told me to put the recovery disk in, it didn't have One Note so she was stumped. After several more days eventually she called back and said I wasn't going to get One Note as it shouldn't have been on the laptop. To make a long story short, I escalated to Corporate Customer Support and they placed the blame on Amazon. Every single employee of Toshiba pointed the finger at someone else and no one helped. There are major language barriers and the employees were inexperienced in customer support and lacked knowledge about their own products. I am not sure what country 1st and 2nd level tech support is (India maybe?) but I was told you have to ask for 3rd level before you go back to the US. The customer svc rep said she was in Manilla so everything seems to be outsourced thus the language issues. Amazon did eventually help me with the software.

So...if you are looking for a good laptop with good customer support do not buy this or any Toshiba..I would give their support an F- and that is generous. If you are technical and want a good laptop and are not worried about support then this is a pretty good one. I would rate the laptop a 4/4.5 and Toshiba a -10 but since we don't have that option a "0".
If I had to do it all over, I wouldn't purchase this laptop. I dread if that fingerprint reader is a real problem as I don't ever want to have to call Toshiba support again. Hope this review helps you in your decision.

    P105-S6197 Good Workhorse Laptop4
This computer serves me well and I more than satified with it's capabilities. If you are a big gamer, then choose another computer with a better video card. I use my computer for business functions and also I use it as a gps using software and hardware available. It's a good workhorse laptop.

    Excellent traveling companion5
I could not have asked for a better laptop than this. It is everything I wanted. It is fast, easy to hook up, charges up quickly. I love the "man size" screen. No more squinting. I must point out that Toshiba support is excellent. I had several questions about the wi-fi capability, and my inability to go on-line with it. Their rep was patient to a fault, walked me through everything I needed to know to get going. You do not get that kind of service elsewhere. Vista is a little hard to get used to, especially dealing with pictures, but that's not the laptop's fault. I wish I had had the opportunity to choose between Vista and XP. I would have definitely chosen XP.
