Slightly skeptical buyer surprised and pleased.
This notebook is surprisingly wonderful for its price. I took a gamble buying this notebook because it was priced very low and I had seen a few consistent complaints about it on review sites but I took a chance because of its pricing and because I plan to buy a newer and better one in a little over a year.
This notebook is sleek, shiny and looks and feels solidly made. I like the new Windows Vista on it, though I was highly skeptical of it at first after reading some negative comments about it as well on the internet. Turns out I love it! They've stream-lined some things and added lots of cool new features. It's a pleasure to use and intuitively set up for learning by exploration but it helps to do the tutorial, I'm sure.
This HP is powerful enough for my needs; I'm a very mobile, full-time student: I can play Itunes, work on assignments (on the Office 2007 that came with the system, which I've been quite impressed with as well), be signed in to school as well as have several other internet research pages open and I experience no lag (1 GB Ram) on the machine.
It's an entertainment style laptop so it has a 15.4in screen which is pretty, big and widescreen as well as CD/DVD/DVD Burner on it! I haven't had any desire to use the DVD Burner since I already have a DVD burning machine but I imagine it will come in handy soon!
The only problems I've noticed are:
1. The shiny glare all over the screen during daylight or while outside and limits visibility considerably. You can adjust to gain more shadow but still a poor to fair experience at best. It's glossiness can also be a nuisance because finger-print smudges get on it quickly and I've had to wipe it down 4 times (it comes with a special wipe) since I got it (I've had it for 7 days).
2. I didn't like the way the mouse reacted at first - way too sensitive and selected things when I didn't want to - I soon changed that by going into Advanced Settings and deactivating the 'Tapping' feature.
3. The key-board's keys feel stiff - they're too 'clackety'. I touch-type and in my opinion, fluidic-feeling keys are way better because they don't slow you down.
Overall, I'm really impressed with the value of the machine and I am really enjoying playing and schooling on it. Great choice for light to heavy personal use!! Very fun to use as well. :)

I would upgrade this machine to 5 stars if I could but Amazon won't let me!!
I had to add this - less than a week ago, I had an entire big mug of very warm tea spill all over my the surface and machine of my laptop. I instantly flipped it over in an effort to drain as well as unplugged it but it shut down instantly. This had me worried as I feared a short-circuit. I kept it flipped upside down and drained while a small fan blew at it. I also took out the battery and wiped up the entire back. I was very concerned that I would lose the laptop as I had considered myself blessed for getting such a sturdy machine for so cheap (less than $800).
I am glad to say that once the computer was dried (it took 24 hours), I plugged it in and it functions as if nothing ever happened. My feeling is that it had some sort of safety feature that shut it off as soon as it sensed something was awry. Please forgive my rant but I am simply amazed by this machine and the value it's brought into my life.
If you're looking for a cheap yet sturdy and dependable notebook for personal or home use - THIS is your machine. I have more than gotten my money's worth out of it. Thanks.
